Marjorie Brown will be speaking on the Violence and Harassment panel at Lancaster House’s 2015 Human Rights and Accommodation Conference. The conference will be held in Vancouver on April 15-16, 2015.

Violence and harassment in the workplace can result in harm that extends beyond the immediate abuser and victim, creating an environment poisoned by intimidation, distrust, and disengagement. How can employers and unions investigate and remedy workplace harassment and violence? How can they identify when an employee may be engaging in harassing behaviour because of a mental health disability? When might harassment or violence have a “trickle down” effect caused by stressors in the workplace? What steps should workplace parties take to ensure that victimized employees feel safe in their jobs?

Topics to be addressed include:

  • Legal protections against violence and harassment
  • Pro-active steps that can be implemented to support and promote a harassment-free workplace
  • How to deal with with alleged harassers
  • Individual remedies for employees who have been harassed, and systemic remedies to cleanse poisoned workplaces
