ARTICLING STUDENT AND SUMMER RESEARCH ASSISTANT INFORMATION

Articling Student Program

We generally hire one Articling Student each year who has the opportunity to work with all lawyers in the firm during the course of the year. Our preference is to have our articling student attend PLTC in the May to July term. While the majority of the articling experience is in labour law, we are able provide limited exposure to other areas of the law incidental to labour law including criminal, company, insurance, bankruptcy and insolvency, pension and benefits, and a variety of litigation files. We provide the opportunity for the articling student to assist senior lawyers at the firm in preparing and presenting cases at arbitration hearings, Labour Relations Board hearings, and Provincial Court hearing during their year.

We offer Articling Students a competitive salary, full benefits, and pay the cost of the Professional Legal Training Course and salary during attendance at PLTC.

Description of Summer Research Assistant Program

We generally hire one law student each summer as a research assistant to assist lawyers in the firm in researching labour law and related legal issues. While we usually hire a student who has completed second year, we have also hired students who have completed first and third years. The research assistant position may have the opportunity to observe arbitration and labour relations board hearings and usually has the chance to work with most of the senior lawyers in the firm.

Application, Interview and Selection Process

We welcome applications from law students attending a Canadian law school who have a particular interest in the practice of union-side labour law and employee-side employment law or one of our other primary areas of practice. Given the highly specialized nature of our practice, we generally restrict interviews for either the Summer Research Assistant or the Articling Student position to those applicants possessing either a background in labour relations and/or the trade union movement or those expressing a strong desire to represent workers and unions and demonstrating a commitment to progressive causes and values. We welcome applications from women, visible minorities, aboriginal people, people with disabilities, and people from the LGBT community.

Applications for Articling Student positions commencing the following year will be accepted until midnight on May 31. Application packages should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, undergrad and law school transcripts. Generally, applications are reviewed by the firm's Articling Committee who conduct first interviews in early June. Second interviews are generally held later in June. Applicants invited for a second interview will be asked to provide a legal writing sample. Our aim is to make offers by the end of June or early July.

Applications for the Summer Research Assistant position for the following summer will be accepted until September 30th. Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae and undergrad marks (attachments should be in PDF format).

Applications for both Summer Research Assistant and Articling Student should be sent to the attention of Sebastien Anderson, Chair of the Articling Committee either via email with attachments in PDF format (sanderson@vslo.ca) or via facsimile transmission (1-604-684-8427). Our preference is to receive Application packages only via email or facsimile transmission.
